Bari Arden Arant ('22) and Matt Layton ('22) Sign Athletic Letters of Intent

Calhoun Academy is pleased to announce that two members of the Class of 2022 signed letters of intent to participate in collegiate athletics. The signing ceremony to celebrate these athletes took place on February 2, 2022 at 9:00am in the Calhoun Academy Gymnasium.

Senior Bari Arden Arant signed a letter of intent to play softball at USC Upstate.

“I want to give a huge thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and friends for inspiring me to live my dream of playing college softball. I can’t wait to see what is to come in the near future, said Arant. “Thanks again for all the love and support. Go Spartans!”

Senior Matt Layton signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Spartanburg Methodist College.

“ I can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for me. I also would like to thank one special coach, my dad, Todd Layton. Thank you for pushing me all these years,” said Layton.

Both Arant and Layton were accompanied by the student body, family, and friends. Coach Matt Polin, Coach Kyle Gore, and Coach Justin Nash were also in attendance. Headmaster Becky Haigler opened the ceremony. Calhoun Academy Athletic Director, Todd Layton also spoke on behalf of both athletes.

“I am very proud of Matt and Bari Arden. These are two people who have gone through a lot of adversity with injuries and both of them had to work hard to battle back to get this opportunity. They also put in a lot of work, especially when no one is watching. They do extra reps in the batting cages at night, they spend a lot of their weekends in the summer and in the fall traveling to play softball and baseball. It has paid off,” said Coach Layton.
