School resumes on regular schedule Tuesday, February 12, 2008. All the students
are filled with anticipation of the four-day weekend. Some plan to ski, others
to just "chill," or, if you are an upperclassman, probably finish some last minute
class project.
Many awed gasps escaped the lips of Calhoun Academy’s Fifth Grade last Friday

Governor’s and Lieutenant Governor’s offices. They saw the bronze stars that cover
the places where Union General WilliamTecumseh Sherman shot the State House with
cannons during the Civil War. The Fifth Grade thoroughly enjoyed the personal
tour and learned valuable and interesting information about our state’s history.

Calhoun Academy receives gift from Tri-County Electric
Calhoun Academy has received a gift of $4,000.00 from the Tri-County Electric
Trust Board of Trustees to use in purchasing new computers and programs for the
upper school laboratory. This grant was made from Tri-County’s Operation Round-Up
funds. The Academy’s Board of Directors, administration, faculty, and students
are most appreciative of this contribution from Tri-County Electric.
Calhoun Academy has long had computer labs for instruction of lower and upper
school students. Lower school programs are designed to supplement and augment
classroom instruction in math, English and writing, science, and social studies,
as well as have students learn proficiency in keyboarding. Students may take basic
computer and advanced computer as credit courses in the upper school. In the basic
course students are capable of working in spreadsheets, word processing, presentations,
and Internet research. Application programs from Microsoft are taught including
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The advanced computer students engage in an in-depth
study and use of the Windows operating system. They learn to edit graphics, general
programming, and learn to use a markup language and a programming language, Java
Script.
With the purchase during the summer of 15 new, state-of-the-art computers for
the upper school lab and programs such as "Windows XP Professional 2007", Mrs.
Ashlei Wilder, will teach students to be knowledgeable and ready for anything
they may need to know in the use of computers in college or in the work place.
The cost of the equipment and programs exceeded $21,000.00. Frequent changes in
technology require schools to stay up-to-date in curriculum and equipment, regardless
of cost.
Not only are the students in the four basic and advanced computer classes benefiting
from the purchase, but the lower school computer lab was also upgraded by placing
the upper school computer equipment in that lab. The old lower school lab computers
were placed in classrooms for teachers to use with individual students and for
class CD-ROM demonstrations.

Fun At Camp Bob Cooper
The Calhoun Academy Fifth graders went to Camp Bob Cooper on April 23-25 and
had the best time ever. They went fishing, hiking, and they had to work together
to get through obstacles. They saw raccoons, snakes, baby ducks, and fish. Every
morning they went to the flagpole at 7:00 AM and prepared for the day. They were
able to get in the water at water class. They went to campfire at night for their
last activity. I think they enjoyed it and so did their teachers. I hope the fourth

FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM
The season of Christmas brings joy and laughter to people of all ages. While
this holiday relates to Christian meanings, we often find ourselves with secular
greed and temporal pleasures. While members of society dream of designer clothing
and flashy sports cars, the first grade class of Mrs. Betsy Boland is making a
difference. These boys and girls correspond with a fighter pilot currently involved
in Iraq. "Captain Andy" flies jets such a F15 fighter planes serving our great
nation while willing to risk his life for our freedom. Mrs. Betsy’s class has
written numerous letters to this fighter pilot who has returned their comforting
accounts with photographs of his plane.
As a special treat for this first grade class, Captain Andy sent a flag that
was flown over Baghdad, Iraq from his F15 plane on September 29, 2006. This event
occurred during a mission supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. In honor of this
gift, Mrs. Betsy Boland planned to frame the American Flag in order to display
its significance to the actions of the current war. This experience taught the
first grade class that, out of all the gifts imaginable in the season of Christmas,
that freedom merits the most value and respect. First graders learned that fighting
for their beliefs and ideas was important and that our country truly is the greatest
nation in the entire world.
